• Complete Grammar/Vocabulary assessment book page 94 to 147 as revision. Parents please help your child to mark the exercises that he has done (answers can be found at the back of the book). --> The boys should be able to complete all these exercises on their own as they have learnt all the required grammar items already. Thus, these grammar exercises should serve as a revision and not meant to be "re-taught".
• Please refer to the previous post on "How to Answer Comprehension Questions" to get some tips on minimising the deduction of marks when answering comprehension questions.

How to Answer Comprehension Questions

1. Answer in a complete sentence (with a full stop)

Incomplete sentences are grammatically wrong --> marks will be deducted

• E.g. How does Uncle Tom go to work on a fine day?
• Incorrect: On his motorcycle
• Correct: He goes to work on his motorcycle.

Do not start a sentence with "Because" or "It was because" --> this is grammatically wrong and marks will be deducted

• E.g. Why does Mrs Bala take a taxi home?
• Incorrect: Because she has many things to carry.
• Incorrect: It was because she has many things to carry.
• Correct: She has many things to carry.

2. Do not repeat the question in the answer

Repeating the question in the answer will not result in a deduction mark but it may cause careless (spelling/grammatical) mistakes to occur in the process of copying

• 1st E.g. How does Uncle Tom go to work on a fine day?
• Avoid this: Uncle Tom goes to work on his motorcycle on a fine day.
• Use this: He goes to work on his motorcycle.

• 2nd E.g. Why does Mrs Bala take a taxi home?
• Avoid this: Mrs Bala takes a taxi home because she has many things to carry.
• Use this: She has many things to carry.

3. Answer the question in the tense stipulated by the question

• E.g. Who were Mr and Mrs Low?
• Incorrect: They are Huiling's parents.
• Correct: They were Huiling's parents.

• If "does/do" appears in the question --> answer in present tense
• If "did" appears in the question --> answer in past tense

4. Answer question that requires the meaning of a word

• E.g. What does the word "pleased" mean?
• Incorrect: happy
• Incorrect: The word pleased means happy.
• Avoid: The word "pleased" means happy.
• Correct: It means happy.

• The answer that is given should be able to replace the word in the passage fittingly.
• E.g. They are very pleased --> They are very happy.

5. Answer the question that requires the quotation of a word, a phrase or a sentence from the passage

• E.g. Which word from the passage means happy?
• Incorrect: pleased
• Correct: The word is "pleased".

A sentence

• E.g. Which sentence from the passage tells you that Mr and Mrs Low are happy?

Incorrect:

• They are very pleased.
• The sentence is They are very pleased. (no quotation mark)
• The sentence is "they are very pleased." (capitalization is required)
• The sentence is "They are very pleased". (wrong placement of full-stop)

Correct: The sentence is "They are very pleased."

Happy Children's Day

Dear P1 Kindness boys,

Before you came into my life, I wondered if teaching was the right career for me. I started to doubt myself and I wonder if there is something more to teaching. After you (all 28 of you) came into my life, you (every single one of you) have helped me fully understand the true meaning of teaching.

All you little ones have unknowingly helped me re-ignite my passion for teaching (since the first day I met all of you) and you have unknowingly taught me how to be a better teacher. Through you, I love my career even more and because of you, my life has become more meaningful.

I am very proud to be your teacher because all of you are such excellent pupils!

You would have received the Spiderman homework file and the Ben10 notebook from me today. These are not expensive gifts but they would be very useful to you. I hope you would like it and remember to use it! (Boys who always copy your homework on scraps of paper, don't tell me that you don't have a notebook ok? You can use the cool Ben10 notebook now!)

These are things which I wanted to tell you in class but before I could elaborate, the bell has rung. :(

We are celebrating Children's Day tomorrow. Have lots of fun and enjoy yourself in school tomorrow!

Clarifications

Dear Parents,

The 30-word spelling which I will be carrying out tomorrow is not the real SA2 spelling test. The test which will be carried out tomorrow is for me to make sure that the boys have learnt the words and for them to find out the words that they still have problem with. (They were instructed to learn the 30 words over the Sept hols.)

Please note that out of these 30 words, 10 will appear in the SA2 Listening Comprehension paper (Paper 3). These words will not be tested in the form of our weekly spelling tests. Please refer to SA1 Listening Comprehension paper (last section) to refresh your memory on how these words will be tested.

Teach Me To Fish Programme

Dear Parents,

We have just recently conducted the "Teach Me To Fish" programme with the help of parent volunteers from our class. This programme aims to teach pupils skills which they can use for life. Different levels will learn different skills according to their age group. For our lovely P1 boys, they learnt how to tie shoe laces and button their shirts on their own, how to spread butter and jam the right way as well as basic manners such as saying "please" and "thank you".

Building Our Own Savannah (MLEA Activity)

Dear Parents,


Here are some photos of our darlings building their very own savannah. For those of you who are puzzled about why we are doing this, here's a short explanation:

In the Stellar programme, we create common experiences for the boys so that we can use these experiences to carry out class writing or group writing. The Stellar programme believes that pupils will be able to write better if they have more enriching experiences. Through these experiences, the boys learn new vocabulary words as well as improve on their grammar as they learn to put sentences together. These knowledge will grow with more MLEA activities and they will eventually learn to write a piece of good story on their own.

A tip for parents: When you bring your kids out (on a shopping trip, to the zoo, overseas, etc), you can get him to write about it when he comes home. Writing about his trip will help him learn how to put his thoughts into words. Through this process, he will be able to learn more words as well as learning how to string his sentences together. This method is effective as he sees the practical usage of English (he would understand that he needs to learn English well so that he can write with minimum difficulty). And of course, parents, you need to play an active role here as they are still young and they do not know how to use a dictionary yet. So it would be very helpful (and less exasperating for them) to them if you could be around to help them with the spelling of words.
