ELP

Dear Parents,

The boys have been doing ELP worksheets for 3 weeks already and some of you may be wondering what ELP is all about. So here's a brief summary of what it is.

ELP stands for Experiential Learning Programme. For every worksheet, the boys will have a set of manipulatives to work with. They have to make use of these manipulatives to answer the questions in the worksheet, then figure out the pattern and explain (in words) the pattern that they have observed (usually found in the last section of the worksheet). There will be ELP tests so boys should treat the daily ELP worksheets seriously and use them to revise for ELP tests.

ELP Worksheet 3 was rather challenging. To help you in your revision with your son, here are the answers to Part III. Please refer to ELP Worksheet 3 (which can be found in the Maths file):

Q: Based on Part I and II, what pattern did you observe?
A: The number of counters on each side is always one more than the figure number and the number of counters is the figure number multiplied by 4.

Q: Given that the number of counters on each side is 20, what will the figure number be? Show how you arrive at your answer?
A: 20 - 1 = 19. The figure number is 19.
