Tips for SA1 English Exam

Dear Parents,

SA1 exam is drawing near and I see our boys making mistakes, which if corrected, will help them to retain quite a lot of marks in their exam papers. Every now and then I will be dropping hints for the exam or highlighting common mistakes which the boys make. Please check the blog regularly for these exam tips!

English (Comprehension Open-ended)
  • Do not start a sentence with "Because...". (incomplete sentence - zero marks)
  • Do not start a sentence with "It is because..." (wrong sentence structure - zero marks)
  • Example: Question - "Why was Jane wet?" Be precise and straight to the point in your answer. Your answer should be put simply as "She had fallen into the pond." or "She fell into the pond."
  • Tip: Avoid using the word "because" (to make sure that you will not end up forming the wrong sentence structure). Just be straight to the point.
  • If a question is phrased in the past tense (you know it's past tense when you see the word "did"), you answer in past tense. If the question is phrased in present tense, you answer in present tense.

English (Comprehension MCQ)
  • The passage for the comprehension MCQ can come in many forms (story, advertisements, invitations, etc)
  • For revision, please revise food recipe.
  • Let your boy read more food recipes and familiarise himself with the format of a recipe.
  • (I can't be more obvious than that already......................)

  • The boys were given a "surprise English test" today. If your child comes home today and tells you that he sat for an English exam today, please do not be alarmed. The marks are not counted. It was actually a trial (revision) paper to prepare them for the exam. The boys are still in their "lala-land" and exam is drawing near, thus I gave them a mock English exam so that they would get a feel of how an exam is like. I will return and go through the paper with them soon. Parents, when the paper is returned, you can use it to have a gauge of your child's standard and focus on revising the section which your child is weak in.
Maths
  • Subtraction revision worksheet - complete and submit tomorrow.

  • Reminder: Spelling (Unit 13) is suspended for next week. Please study SA1 Spelling List Words 1 - 15.
  • Oral exam was completed today. Majority of the boys did well in their reading and I'm glad to see that the boys remembered the techniques (I see... I think... I feel...) for picture discussion! Boys, give yourselves a pat on your back for your good effort!

Maths
  • A number of boys could not finish their work in class so I gave them permission to complete it at home. Parents please check if your son has brought his ATM book home. If he has, please ensure that he completes all corrections in the book and pages 129, 131, 132, 133 and 135.

Techniques/ Tips for Oral Picture Discussion

Dear Parents,

These were the techniques/ tips that were taught in class today:

  • Start off the picture discussion with the following sentences - "This picture shows the scene in a..." or "This picture shows a..." or "This is a picture of a..." [Example: This picture shows a playground.]
  • Proceed on to describe interesting events in the picture (but in a systematic manner). Describe interesting events in a clockwise/anti-clockwise direction, left to right or front to back. Do not "jump" all over the place. Be systematic. (To minimise confusion, I have told the boys to start off from the top left, then move on to the top right, bottom right and finally bottom left - they have learnt these terms in class already)
  • When describing an interesting event in the picture, start off by saying "I see..." [Example: I see two boys on the slide. One is wearing a striped shirt and the other is wearing a school uniform. The boy in the striped shirt is pushing the boy in uniform down the slide.]
  • After that, proceed on with "I think..." [Example: I think that this is wrong]
  • Finally, end the discussion of this event by stating your feelings "I feel..." [Example: I feel that the boy in striped shirt should be punished for his behaviour.]
  • After describing a few interesting events in the picture (about 3 or 4 events), you have to end off your picture discussion properly. If the picture is about playing in the playground, you can say "I feel that the playground is a fun place but everyone should be careful when they play". End your picture discussion according to the theme of the picture.
  • Final rule: Always use PRESENT TENSE during oral (but use past tense when writing compositions). Over the years, many boys often get confused between which tenses to use for oral and composition, so right now we must start on the right track. Drill this into our kids right from the beginning: Present tense for oral and past tense for compositions.

Simplified version
  • Start with a general statement of what the picture is about
  • Describe what you SEE
  • Elaborate what you see by stating what you THINK is happening
  • Tell the examiner how you FEEL about it

Even more simplified version
  • Describe --> State what you think is happening ---> Tell me how you feel about it (your opinion)
  • Being able to state your opinions about the events will help to score more marks as it shows that a child is analysing the picture (analytical thinking) instead of merely describing.

Hopefully these tips are useful to you. Do make use of the 2 practice pictures that I have given out today as well as pictures which you can find in the assessment books. Get your child to familiarise themselves with these steps so that they will not get tongue-tied on the day that they are tested. I will be revising with them again. Hopefully the practices that the boys are receiving in school and at home will help them to do well in their first oral examination. :)

  • Sign SA1 Spelling list. Show Miss Tan on Wednesday. (Note: Out of the 30 words, 10 words will be tested in the Listening Comprehension Exam). To ensure that the boys have learnt all 30 words well, I will be testing them on 3 different days. Spelling words 1 - 10: 4th May (Tue); Spelling words 11 - 20: 10th May (Mon); Spelling words 21 - 30: 14th May (Fri).
  • Spelling (Unit 11) will be conducted on Wednesday.
  • Oral practice for picture discussion was given today (Practice 1 & 2). You may use these 2 pictures for practice at home. Techniques and tips have been taught in class. Please revise with your child and get him to recall what was taught in class.

Update on Character Alive

Dear Parents,

I am very impressed by the boys' work! I can see that they have put in a lot of effort in their scripts and they are of very good quality. Thank you for taking the time to guide them (and help them with the spelling of difficult words). I hope it has been a fruitful learning experience for the both of you.

I have checked their scripts and made some changes. I have also demonstrated how their script should be acted out. All that they have to do this weekend is to memorise their script and practise acting out their character. They have to bring their props on Monday for their performance as well. Please do not spend too much time on the props as the script and the acting is more important. Just source for materials that are readily available and create simple props.

Thank you for your support in helping to create fun in learning for the boys!
