Learning Journey to Healthzone.

Dear Parents,

Here's a little add-on to Lee Laoshi's update earlier.

1. Pupils need only bring a small bag to school tomorrow, which must be brought down to the parade square for morning assembly.

2. Bring along a water bottle, pencil case and storybook. Coloured pencils may be kept in the classroom.

3. Boys who have morning practice, please come down to the parade square once your CCA teacher has dismissed you. Everyone must be accounted for before we can set off to the Healthzone.

4. There will be NO breaks prior to the bus boarding at 8am. Make sure your son has a hearty breakfast in the morning.

5. We will be back in school by 11:45am. After which, the boys will have their recess break and proceed back to class at 12:30pm.

Dear Parents,

I have returned the pupils their Write Right notes yesterday, as well as their comprehension workbook. Today, I returned them their listening comprehension and composition trial papers. Please sign these two papers.

On another note, we have come to the end of our class library programme. Pupils are to return me the books by this Friday, 14th October. Only 19 of them have already done so.

Dear Parents,

For English today, we did a trial paper for listening comprehension. We will be doing trial papers for composition and the main paper tomorrow.

I have given the boys two stacks of notes today - one for composition and the other focusing on grammar. The former contains tips for writing as well as some useful phrases in which the boys may want to incorporate into their essays. Meanwhile, the grammar notes focus on pronouns, articles, determiners, possessives and connectors. I hope you find them of much help. I have made them as bite-sized as possible so the boys may easily understand the contents.

We will be having the last spelling of the year tomorrow (unit 18) as well as book exchange. Please ensure that your son is well-prepared for both activities.

Dear Parents,

Today we did a composition practice in class, incident being a fire at home. We will be doing more composition practices in the run-up to the exams to get the boys used to writing under the time limit of 45 minutes, as well as to brush up on their writing style.

As a guide, I have informed the boys to write four paragraphs - one for each picture - with each paragraph having a minimum of four sentences. That should allow them to sufficiently cover all the points. Typically, the first picture would reflect the setting - who, where when. As the body is the main focus of the story, I have allocated two paragraphs to it. Pupils may end the story by explaining what happens in the end and if they wish, include a lesson to be learnt.

There is no homework for today. Spelling tomorrow is for Unit 17.1.

Dear Parents,

Today I handed out the exam spelling list as well as an oral examination package to the pupils. I have gone through both with them.

For the oral exam package, I highlighted certain points the oral examiner will be looking out for. The reading aloud component should be manageable as it is much like the poem reading AMODES. As for the picture discussion, I kept emphasizing the following:

1. Always begin with an overview of the setting - where? when? eg. "This picture depicts a scene at..."

2. Talk about 3 main points, starting with the most obvious/important one. For each one, describe who is doing what, suggest how he is feeling and explain why, then put yourself in his shoes.

3. Summarize.

4. Answer using present tense or present continuous tense.

5. Never use your hand to point at the picture.

I have attached 3 passages and 3 pictures for practice.

Meanwhile, the exam spelling list is for all the four components of the English final year exams - oral, listening comprehension, composition & the main paper. For the oral exam, your child only needs to know how to read the list of words but he must know how to spell them for the other papers.

Note that as much as possible, we will try to test as many students as we can on the first day of the oral exam so that lessons may resume quickly.

There is no homework for today. Please ensure that your child learns his spelling (unit 16.1) for tomorrow. That's all.

Dear Parents,

The boys were tasked to complete learning sheets 16.2, 16.3 and 16.6 today. These exercises are a recap of what was covered in the recent chapters - pronouns, connectors and contractions. Kindly check that they have completed all the necessary pages.

With regards to spelling, I did not give out the spelling list today. I thought about it and decided that I shall eliminate all possibilities of error while note-taking. Hence, I have written out the meanings of the words, along with their example sentences and photocopied everything for the pupils. I will be attaching this to the spelling list. You may expect it either tomorrow or Thursday.

On another note, the boys will be off on their learning journey tomorrow. We will leave the school at 8am and arrive at approximately 11:15am. Following which, the boys will have their break. Lessons will resume afterwards, with an hour each of Chinese and English.

Welcome back! It's the final term. I hope you're ready for the mad rush that awaits us. The pupils' task today is to go home and get your signature for the following:

1) Show & Tell AMODES

2) Poem reading AMODES

3) Listening comprehension AMODES

4) Spelling Unit 15.1 (They are to complete their corrections as well)

5) Information sheet for Term 4's work

It is pertinent that they get your signature as we need to do filing for their book check this week. Speaking of which, as a result of the book check, we cannot have spelling this week for Unit 15.2 (in term 3's spelling list). Instead, I will reschedule that for next Tuesday, 20/9.

The Term 4 spelling list is out. I will be issuing it to the boys tomorrow. As we have 5 rounds of spelling (excluding Unit 15.2) and only up till Week 5 to prepare for the final exams, I will need to conduct spelling twice a week in weeks 2 & 3. I am so sorry about this and I wish I didn't have to resort to this but there is really no other way to cover the syllabus. Please bear with me.

The schedule will be as follows:

I feel privileged for having the opportunity to speak with some of you over the past few days and am humbled by your support. I noticed that you are very pleased with the supplementary notes, bearing in mind the boys never had any to refer to beforehand. While this might sound potentially blasphemous due to the nature of my job, when I was a student myself, I remember forgetting what my teachers taught me after a couple of days. This was mainly why I decided the boys should have something to refer to, to assist them in their revision.

As such, I will be coming up with grammar notes for every upcoming unit to correspond with what is being covered in the learning sheets. However, as I am still unsure which areas of grammar your son might need further assistance in, especially for those that have been covered in the first half of the year, I would like to urge you to email me (nurul_ain_mohamad_ibrahim@moe.edu.sg) and share your ideas or concerns. For example, if your son needs some guidance with prepositions, do not hesitate to tell me. I will try my best to break down the concepts for him into bite sizes and create a trusty guide for the class.

Help me help your son in mastering the English Language. Hope to hear from you soon!

Dear Parents,

I'm sure you would have heard the news by now that the Presidential Elections will be held on Saturday, 27th August 2011 and consequently, the following Monday, 29th August will be a holiday in lieu. As such, we will be looking at a hectic few weeks ahead (possibly only about 11 days of lessons over 4 weeks) with 2 more units to complete for English amidst all those holidays. Hang on tight for the ride!

To keep you in the loop, I will be away from school tomorrow as I am involved in the school musical. Rest assured that the boys will be given some tasks to complete.

Also, there is an AMODES test on comprehension scheduled for next Thursday. I am pleased to inform you that it has been postponed to Friday. This will give me more time to review certain things with them when school resumes next week. Meanwhile, the weekly spelling test will be carried out on Thursday, 11th August.

Today, we learnt about quantifiers (eg. all, whole, much, many & lots) and contractions. The boys have been assigned two activities as homework.

1. Learning sheet 14.3

2. Comprehension book pages 120-122

On a separate note altogether, I would like to thank you for your compliments and encouragement pertaining to the supplementary sheets I created for your son :) You might have noticed that the sheets are numbered 13.2, 13.4, 13.7 and 13.8 - instead of 13.1, 13.2, etc. This is to correspond to the learning sheets given earlier, in order to aid the revision process. One fine day, Cookie came for a visit... :)

Last term, our old boy, Wei En (who is currently in Secondary 1), came back to Catholic High and visited our class with his classmates. They came to educate our little ones on the proper handling of animals. We had a special guest too - a friendly and adorable Golden Retriever named Cookie. The boys were really excited to have Cookie around! Here are some pictures taken on that day...

Parents, don't worry, all the boys went to the toilet to wash their hands after handling the dog :)
